The photo effect

Photographs are static representations of how we looked at the time that an image
is taken.

In a world where almost everyone has a space on social media, photographs are now
being regarded with a new sense of importance. There is a request to upload a photograph
to every

social media site to ‘improve your user experience.’ With everyone taking photographs,
are photographic representations of ourselves overrated? Do some people take worse
photos than they really look? Can your personality ‘shine’ through your photos?

Our interpretation of our

photographs has to do with how we perceive ourselves rather than how we really are.
This has made the term ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ seem convincing. You
are as beautiful as you perceive yourself to be. This perception of ourselves is
based on our life experiences coupled with what is popularly considered as beautiful.

If you feel that your true beauty is not captured when you take photographs, you
are not alone. A study conducted by Harvard University, the Frozen Face Effect noted
that more persons found a video of themselves more appealing than a photograph.

‘A picture is (still) worth a thousand words’. It can speak volumes about how we
genuinely feel at a given time. However, who we really are goes much deeper. Photographs
do not always convey how we really feel therefore we may have a negative perception
towards them.

We are traditionally programmed to perceive smiling faces and slender physique as
being beautiful. This has resulted in many women being unable to accept themselves
as beautiful because they do not fit that criteria.

Taking beautiful
photographs are overrated!

You are much more beautiful than a photograph can capture. No camera can capture
your winsome personality, your ability to make others happy, how empathetic you
are to those who are less fortunate and your determination to succeed in life. These
are your most important attributes.

Aim each day to participate in activities that will enhance the most beautiful parts
of yourself, your personality. You are magnificent no matter how your photographs
look!
